COVID 19 – Alert Level 1

Update – 11th June

Tennis Northern in consultation with TNZ and the other Regional Associations have been working on what tournaments and events would look like once we got to Alert Level 1. We have collectively agreed to recommence our tournament space conservatively, to ensure a balanced return to competition. We acknowledge that travel at Alert Level 1 is possible however could be expensive and with short notice, prohibitive of our players competing.

This balanced return to tournaments is consistent with our work on the Sport NZ Balance Is Better philosophies (see bottom of this email for more details). We are committed to:

  • giving our playing group time to transition, train and prepare for competition, minimising the impact of overload/injuries
  • being mindful of varying family financial situations during COVID-19 and allowing appropriate plans to be made with regard to travel
  • ensuring winter sports within New Zealand are not further impacted in participation for players who play in a variety of activities and sports

With this in mind, all Junior Masters Points Race events and Kiwi Money Tournaments will recommence from August. Our focus in the coming months is “compete local”, with many new playing opportunities being created within all areas of New Zealand.

“I’m excited to see so many playing opportunities for all players throughout New Zealand now we are at Alert Level 1” says Blake Taylor, Tennis NZ Tournament and Events Manager. “We have worked together through many scenarios of returning to tournaments, and have agreed to focus on playing locally for a few months while we recalibrate and settle into our new normal.”

The July school holidays will be filled with tournaments all over the country, with other events being introduced over weekends and other times, maximising everyone’s playing opportunity.

Tennis NZ will be in a position soon to release the new Compete Local calendar, as well as the National Tournament calendar for the remainder of 2020.

Get ready to compete locally, and continue your preparations for the National events. Tennis is BACK!
